Phone zombies need to start staring ahead
FOUR. That is how many times during one day this week (one day!) in which I have narrowly avoided someone walking slap bang into me because they were looking down at their phones.
I see it more and more on the streets these days, people of all ages who would rather walk out into moving traffic, or a crowd, or me, than look up from the hypnotic screen in their hands.
Is what they’re doing really so urgent that they can’t look where they’re going? Sure, we’ve all heard a phone ring while we’ve been out and about, fumbling in pockets trying to find the thing before it stops, but this is different.
One of the culprits this week was, I kid you not, crossing a road while carrying a phone with both hands, headphones in ears, watching a video.
Well, watch out, texters. Next time I might not leap out the way.
