Laurel family’s grave tribute

-

THE neglected and unmarked grave of the mother of comedy legend Stan Laurel is to be restored as part of efforts to honour him and his roots.

Laurel, pictured right, was only 18 when his mother, Margaret Jefferson, died in 1908 from illness and was buried in Cathcart Cemetery in Glasgow, where the family had lived.

Laurel’s great-granddaughter Cassidy Cook is planning to add a headstone after learning about the grave from Laurel and Hardy expert Ross Owen, a consultant on the new movie Stan and Ollie.

She intends to hold a fundraiser to help cover costs, saying: ‘At one time I believe there was a headstone... maybe over time it’s been destroyed or stolen.

‘I’m hopeful we can be there in the summer.’
