STRAIGHT TO THE POINT

-

VIRGIN Media wrote to me on May 31 to say I was due a refund after an error was made when I closed my account. A cheque was supposed to be sent on July 24, but I have since heard nothing. When I rang to chase it, Virgin said I was owed nothing.

S. H., by email. WheN you cancelled your contract, you were supposed to pay an early termination fee of £41.08, but Virgin overcharged you by £1.04. When you called to follow up, Virgin says a technical error meant it could not see you were owed any money. Given the inconvenience it has caused, Virgin has agreed to refund you both the £1.04 and the £41.08. I PAID off a £38 debt on my Debenhams credit card in September. I later received a letter saying I’d missed the payment and now owed £51.47. I replied with proof that I had paid, but received another letter in November to say I now owed £64.56.

B. C., Norfolk. DeBeNhaMs says this issue was the result of an admin error by its financial services partner, NewDay. a refund of £64.56 was put into your account, which you have closed. WHEN my car broke down, the AA engineer couldn’t fix it and refused to tow it home. He said the AA did not allow dogs in its vans. I had to wait three hours for a private tow firm. Is this really the AA’s policy? R.B., by email. aN aa spokesman says the engineer could not take you home because there was not enough room for you, your passenger and your dog. he adds that the three-hour delay was down to a lack of available tow trucks rather than the fact you had a dog.

Many aa patrols allow ‘well-behaved pets’ in their vehicles, but, he says, it is down to the drivers to make the decision. I WANT to cash in some old U.S. dollar American Express Travellers Cheques. One firm said it would charge a 5 pc fee, while a nearby bank said I needed to be a customer. Is there anywhere I can go to cash these cheques for free? J.B., Plymouth. the Post office says around 3,600 of its branches will buy these back for free. I have sent you a list of the four that offer this service in Plymouth, where you live.
