... OF SNOWDONIA

Labour’s vision for Scotland... in Wales

- By Michael Blackley Scottish Political Editor

IT was a party political broadcast that Labour said set out its ‘vision for Scotland’.

But party bosses have been left red-faced after it emerged that it included images of the Welsh countryside.

Mountain peaks in Snowdonia featured in the video, sparking social media users to claim Labour and its Scottish leader Richard Leonard had confused Scotland with Wales.

But party spin doctors claimed that it was not a mistake – and that the scenes were only supposed to show Labour’s ‘vision for Scotland and for the whole of the UK’.

An SNP spokesman said: ‘This is pretty embarrassing for Richard Leonard – it’s hard to shake off Scottish Labour’s “branch office” reputation when they can’t tell Snowdonia from Scotland.’

As the broadcast cuts to the view of Snowdonia, Mr Leonard says: ‘Labour’s vision for Scotland, our vision for the UK, is one where we all support each other, instead of a race to the bottom.’

It was highlighted by a Twitter user in Wales, who said: ‘Nice shot of Tryfan, Nant y Benglog, which by the way is in Wales.’

It is not the first time Scottish Labour has had difficulty with its messages. At its conference last spring, the backdrop to the stage misspelled its own founding leader as ‘Keir Hardy’.

The party also previously used the misspelling ‘genertaion’ in an online advert which condemned the SNP’s record on education.

A Scottish Labour spokesman said: ‘The urgent need to get rid of the Tories and elect a Labour government that will end austerity doesn’t stop at the Border.’
