Sailor from iconic victory photo dies
THE ecstatic American sailor who was photographed kissing a nurse in New York’s Times Square to celebrate the end of the Second World War has died, aged 95.
George Mendonsa appeared in the iconic picture after he embraced dental assistant Greta Friedman on August 1 , 19 5 – the day Japan surrendered.
People spilled into the New York City streets to celebrate the news – and Mr Mendonsa planted a kiss on Miss Friedman, whom he had never met.
Alfred Eisenstaedt’s photo – V-J Day in Times Square – was published in Life magazine.
Mr Mendonsa died after a fall at an assisted living facility in Middletown, Rhode Island, where he lived with his wife of 70 years, his daughter Sharon Molleur told The Providence Journal.
Miss Friedman died in 2016, aged 92, in Richmond, Virginia.
