Lloyd’s saviour dies

-

A BUSinESS chief who saved insurance market lloyd’s of london from collapse in the 1990s has died aged 85.

Sir David Rowland became chairman of lloyd’s in 1993 when it was under assault from a surge in claims from US workers over asbestos poisoning and pollution. Rowland transferred these claims into a new firm called Equitas, hiving them off from the rest of the operation and protecting lloyd’s from financial meltdown. He left the firm in 1997 and was knighted a year later. Rowland, who suffered a stroke in 2017, is survived by wife Diana, son Mark and six grandchildren.
