Seven-week search for missing student Libby ends in tragedy
A BODY found in the Humber Estuary is that of missing student Libby Squire, police confirmed last night.
A post-mortem examination was carried out yesterday afternoon and the remains were formally identified as those of the 21-year-old.
Miss Squire, who was studying at the University of Hull, had been missing for seven weeks since vanishing after a night out in the city on Friday, February 1.
A huge police investigation failed to solve the mystery of what happened to her, but detectives explored the possibility she fell or was pushed into the River Hull near her student housing.
Police have spoken to the undergraduate’s parents, Lisa and Russell Squire, and confirmed that the body is their daughter’s. She was recovered on Wednesday near Grimsby Docks.
Detective Superintendent Martin Smalley said: ‘We can confirm the body recovered is that of Libby Squire. Libby’s family have been informed.’
On the night she was last seen, Miss Squire was said to have been drinking and returned home by taxi after being refused entry into a nightclub. Instead of going into her student house, she walked up the road and sat on a bench.
A 24-year-old man arrested on suspicion of her abduction was later charged with unrelated offences and remains ‘under investigation’.
