Welcome to a house of fun

Quirky home is a joy for kids and adults, writes Paul Drury

-

On their 1965 debut album, The Who sang gloriously about the kids being ‘alright’. In this property, west of Edinburgh, the younger generation must be positively beaming. Rarely has a house been designed with so much attention to detail for the little ones.

The fun starts at the front door, where the bell is an original from a 1950s Routemaster bus. Ding Ding and we’re off!

Dash down to the lower ground floor and you’re in party central, a children’s playroom that is wired for a HD cinema screen and projector for all those Disney movies.

For more adventure, you can watch your dirty clothes come flying out from the bottom of the laundry chute, which starts on the upper floor.

Doors lead out to the enchanting garden, the next destination for anyone under 12.

The green space is divided into two landscaped areas which lead to a timber bridge over a garden stream and woodland linked to the River Almond walkway.

A tree house promises hours of al fresco fun in the summer and there are beehives, a chicken coop, goldfish pond and a play area.

Adults will also find plenty of entertaining touches at this villa in Cammo. A bespoke display or bookcase in the open-plan sitting room was created from ash trees which grew in the garden.

The room has LED colour change mood lighting, a self-irrigating ‘living’ garden wall and a dramatic full-height corner window which overlooks the lawns.

Many of the rooms come with funky wallpaper, sprouting exotic birds and fantastic plants.

The bang up-to-date contemporary kitchen features a range of custom gloss and walnut units, with Buster + Punch handles and Dekton worktops. Miele is the manufacturer behind the fan-assisted ovens, microwave oven, warming drawer and fridge.

Upstairs, a sliding door in the master bedroom leads to a magnificent en suite bathroom, with freestanding roll-top bath, rainfall shower unit, his and hers waterfall wash hand basin and plantation shutters. Oh, and a waterproof TV!

The children may not like bathtime but grown-ups could have a splashing time in here.

While The Who sang about the kids being alright, it would be Madness to overlook another band’s soundtrack to this home... Welcome to the House of Fun.
