THE winter months are the perfect time to escape the UK and discover life in some of mainland Europe’s most beguiling cities. Whether that’s in December, taking in the magic of a traditional Christmas market, or after the festive season, on a restorative, culture-rich getaway, Iona will whisk you from Southampton to northern Europe on an enchanting cruise.
Stop in the beautiful German city of Hamburg, on the banks of the River Elbe, or explore the medieval towns of Lübeck or Lüneburg, sampling local specialities such as marzipan, bratwurst and, of course, beer, or perhaps follow in the footsteps of the Beatles, who first found fame here in the 1960s.
An overnight stay in the historic Dutch port of Rotterdam allows two full days to explore, giving time, if you choose, to head to nearby Amsterdam, with its network of canals.
Or you might book an excursion to Delft, taking in the renowned earthenware factory where the distinctive blue-and-white crockery has been made and hand-painted since the mid-17th century. Perhaps you’ll visit the city of Gouda and the Hoogerwaard Cheese Farm to sample local produce, or head to Kinderdijk, where traditional windmills dot the landscape.
Zeebrugge, is the gateway to the charming Flemish city of Bruges, just ten miles inland. Here, picture-perfect medieval houses line the canals in the city centre and Belgian waffles, chocolate and beer are all be on the menu – and perhaps the opportunity to enjoy a magical Christmas market.
