Record EuroMillions couple to go their separate ways

- By Sam Walker

EUROMILLIONS winners Colin and Chris Weir are to divorce – eight years after scooping £161million.

The couple had been married for 30 years before winning the record-breaking 2011 jackpot.

It had previously been reported that the pair, from Largs, Ayrshire, had been living apart in recent months.

In a statement yesterday, lawyers acting for the couple said: ‘It is with deep regret that Chris and Colin confirm they have been living apart for some time and intend to divorce amicably. There will be no further comment.’

It had also been reported that the couple’s relationship had hit the rocks.

Documents last August showed that Mr Weir, 71, a former STV cameraman, had signed over their £3.5million home in Troon, Frognal House, to his 62-yearold wife, a former psychiatric nurse, and bought a £1.5million waterfront pad nearby.

It comes eight years after the couple, who have two adult children, became Britain’s biggest ever lottery winners.

The couple used their wealth to set up the Weir Charitable Trust in 2013.

They also ploughed money into Partick Thistle FC, as well as splashing out on a string of luxury properties.

In 2017, we told how they bankrolled the SNP’s general election campaign almost single-handedly. The pair gave the party £500,000 in the runup to the snap June election, the vast majority of the £596,000 the SNP received from donors.

The gift took total donations to the SNP from the Weirs to £4.5million in the previous six years, while they have also handed over £2.1million in loans, half of which were repaid.

In addition, they gave £3.5million to Yes Scotland.
