Could you be a tech star just like Alan?
DEMAND is high for technicians, and not just in the engineering sector.
The majority of the UK’s 1.5 million technicians are in engineering, but there are significant numbers in science, health and technology, including the NHS.
Michelle Rea, head of the Technicians Make it Happen campaign, says: ‘Technicians are skilled people who use science, engineering or technology expertise to identify and solve practical problems.
‘An ageing workforce means 50,000 technicians retire annually, so 700,000 more will be needed in the next decade to meet employer demand.’
Alan Proud, a senior orthotic technician at the Newcastle upon Tyne-based Peacocks Medical Group, creates bespoke orthotic devices, such as braces and surgical supports, to help patients with injuries or lifelong conditions.
Alan says: ‘In this career you can help improve someone’s way of life. I once made splints for a woman who had been unable to stand for five years. Thanks to the orthotic splints, she was able to stand at the altar for her wedding. There’s nothing more rewarding than that.’
Alan knew he wanted a creative, handson role helping people. He joined Peacocks Medical Group in 2007 as a trainee technician in the plastics department, working alongside a senior technician.
He started off with an NVQ in manufacturing before completing an apprenticeship in industrial applications and, after training, became an orthotic technician before being promoted to senior technician.
‘I now use a mix of cutting-edge technology and traditional manufacturing techniques to create custom-made devices that support, protect and improve the function of a person’s limb or their upper body,’ he says. ‘Each one is made to fit individual requirements.
‘If you’re creative, love problem-solving and working with your hands, it’s perfect.’ Orthotic technicians need practical and problem-solving skills plus attention to detail. Most technician jobs do not require a degree, so you can enter through a training scheme, apprenticeship or with a vocational qualification. FoR details on technician careers see technicians.org.uk
