Revealed, design for memorial to Eilidh

- By Douglas Barrie

THE design for a memorial to Manchester Arena bombing victim Eilidh MacLeod has been unveiled.

Featuring a young female bagpiper reaching out to a boy, the bronze sculpture is to be erected on the island of Barra next year.

The 14-year-old was one of 22 people killed in the terror attack on May 22, 2017. Islanders on Barra, where Eilidh lived, set up a trust to help fund the memorial.

Although Eilidh was a keen piper, the sculpture by Essex artist Jenna Gearing is not based on the teenager at the request of her family.

Eilidh’s father Roddy MacLeod said: ‘As a family losing Eilidh in such a cruel way was truly horrific.

‘We are incredibly grateful to both Ardonagh Community Trust and Jenna for their commitment and passion in supporting Eilidh’s legacy.’

Eilidh had travelled to Manchester Arena with her friend Laura MacIntyre, 16, to attend a concert by US singer Ariana Grande. Laura survived the blast but was badly injured.

Miss Gearing said: ‘My hope is the sculpture will serve as an endless reminder of the wonderful girl that remains so fondly in our hearts.’
