THINK of Scotland and you will soon think of castles.

From the splendour of Eilean Donan Castle on the road to the Isle of Skye near Dornie in the west, to the ruins of Dunnottar Castle on the Kincardineshire coast in the east, the country is home to everything from seemingly impregnable fortresses to glorious stately homes.

Head off the beaten path and you will discover some of Scotland’s lesser known gems, such as Toward Castle near Dunoon, Duart Castle on the Isle of Mull and Edzell Castle and Gardens in Angus.

In the North-East, you can hit the road and follow the Castle Trail

Scotland also has some fantastic touring routes that are sure to give you a road trip to remember, such as the North East 250, the Argyll Coastal Route, the Highland Tourist Route and the Borders Historic Route.

Or let the train take the strain and head off on a great railway journey where you can sit back, relax and take in the views.
