Scots plane louts facing fines

- By Gerard Couzens

A GROUP of 14 louts were taken off a Scots flight by police yesterday after it touched down in Majorca.

Police were waiting at Palma Airport for the Jet2 plane from Edinburgh after a report of problems on board.

A dozen patrol cars surrounded the aircraft after it landed at 10am in what was described by the local newspaper as a ‘spectacular operation’.

None of the men was arrested, but they were taken to a Civil Guard office to be identified for a report which will be sent to the AESA, the Spanish Aviation Safety and Security Agency. The unnamed men now face fines over their behaviour. Passengers deemed to have committed a ‘very serious’ breach of safety laws can be fined up to 600,000 euros (£530,000).

The tourists involved in yesterday morning’s incident are understood to have ignored orders to put their seatbelts on and walked down the aisles when the seatbelt signs were on. It was not clear if they had been guilty of any other type of yobbish behaviour. A source said: ‘Around ten patrol cars responded to the call for assistance and were on the tarmac waiting for the aircraft when it landed.’

A Jet2 spokesman said: ‘Due to the disruptive behaviour of several passengers on board our flight from Edinburgh to Palma this morning, we took the decision to call the Guardia Civil in Majorca to assist with the disembarkation of those disorderly travellers involved. We are currently liaising with the relevant authorities in Spain.’
