Morgan and Roy are injury worries

- By LAWRENCE BOOTH at the Hampshire Bowl

ENGLAND face an anxious wait to see if captain Eoin Morgan and opening batsman Jason Roy will be fit to face Afghanistan on Tuesday. Both left the field during a comfortable eight-wicket win over West Indies, Morgan with a back spasm and Roy suffering tightness in his left hamstring. He will have a scan today. Neither man batted and Morgan said: ‘When any two players go down it is a little bit of a worry. But we’re not at panic stations yet.’ In Roy’s absence, Joe Root opened the batting for the first time in his international one-day career and his unbeaten century — his second ton of the World Cup — helped England cruise to victory. He had played an unlikely role in the West Indies innings by taking two wickets, both caught and bowled, with his off spin. Morgan has not yet been ruled out of Tuesday’s game at Old Trafford. ‘It normally takes a few days to settle down,’ said the England captain. Roy, however, was out for seven weeks earlier in the year after tweaking the same hamstring in the Caribbean. He hit a superb 153 against Bangladesh in Cardiff, so his absence would be a huge blow. England will know more by Monday, although James Vince is likely to take Roy’s place at the top of the order against Afghanistan. Morgan, who had to stand up in his post-match press conference because of the pain in his back, sang the praises of centurion Root. ‘He is the glue that holds everything together,’ said Morgan. ‘He never seems to go at less than a run a ball. He’s exceptional to watch.’
