Robinson eyes silver lining for the Steelmen

- By JOE GARDNER

STEPHEN ROBINSON wants to win some silverware with Motherwell after committing his future to the Fir Park club. The Steelmen’s boss, and his assistant Keith Lasley, have signed contract extensions until summer 2022. Robinson has taken charge of over 100 Motherwell matches, with the club making it to two cup finals and just missing out on top-six finishes in the last two seasons. The Northern Irishman said: ‘It was a very easy decision. I’m very happy here. I’m very lucky here and I work with very good people. ‘There’ll be times as Motherwell boss when you aren’t winning, and have periods when you wonder whether it’s going to turn — we’ve had that in both seasons. ‘You have to stay strong and believe in what you’re doing. ‘I’ve enjoyed it through the good times and the bad as I’ve had nothing but support from the staff and the fans. I’d love to win a trophy, and perhaps a few years ago people would’ve said it was beyond the realms of possibility. ‘We’ve got to two cup finals, a quarter-final, and, while winning the Premiership this year might be a tall order, why not aim for that? First we have to stay in the top flight, but I have aspirations above that.’ While he hasn’t been at Motherwell long, Declan Gallagher knows how important Robinson is to the club. The former Livingston defender helped his side keep a clean sheet in his competitive debut against Queen of the South last Saturday. ‘It’s great news the boss has signed,’ said Gallagher. ‘There was talk of clubs coming in for him and I could see why. He’s been unbelievable. ‘He’s a top manager and one day he’ll go higher because of how good he is. But it’s great he’s going to be here for a while yet.’
