RETURN TO PERTH CAN REVITALISE MAY

- By GEORGE GRANT

FRAZER WRIGHT is backing former St Johnstone teammate Steve May to rediscover his goal touch in Perth. With his Aberdeen days numbered, May is set to turn back the clock and pen a longterm deal at his hometown club. It is five years since the 26-year-old attacker netted an £800,000 fee when he left Tommy Wright’s Saints for Sheffield Wednesday. Dons boss Derek McInnes splashed £400,000 to lure May from Preston two years ago. But the striker, who netted eight goals in 75 appearances at Pittodrie, is ready to cut and run. Despite interest from Dundee, Kilmarnock, St Mirren and Ross County, Saints boss Wright has emerged as favourite to land his 2014 Scottish Cup hero. ‘It would be a great move for Stevie to return to a club where he would feel comfortable right from the start,’ said cup-winning defender Wright. ‘He is loved by the fans, he is a local boy and Tommy and his assistant Alex Cleland will get the best out of him. It’s probably fair to say he has never really got back to the form which got him the big move to England. ‘But at least he has shown he is over the nasty knee injury he suffered at Preston. ‘Now it is a matter of regaining the confidence he had when he was on fire at Saints. ‘Back then, he was oozing confidence and hitting shots from all over the place. ‘When I saw him last year I thought maybe that was missing from his game. ‘But Tommy is the right man to get his confidence back up and, hopefully, he will score the goals that Saints have been missing.’ Wright could have 23-year-old Estonian international defender Madis Vihmann signed up before tonight’s Betfred Cup clash with Brechin. It is a dead rubber after Saints suffered shock defeats to Montrose and Ross County. But Wright plans to use the Brechin game and a weekend trip to Forfar to rebuild confidence before the opening Scottish Premiership clash with champions Celtic in Glasgow.
