BAKED BRITAIN!

Thousands cram beaches as the mercury hits 27C... and it’s going to get even hotter

- By Paul Drury and John Paul Breslin

SCOTLAND’s beaches resembled Mediterranean resorts yesterday as hordes of sunbathers enjoyed the hot summer weather.

Edinburgh’s Portobello Beach was packed as temperatures across the country soared.

The hottest place north of the Border was Kinloss, Moray, where the mercury hit 7.6C (81.3F)

And Scots will find out today if the country’s record overnight temperature – 0.5C (68.9F) at Creebridge, Wigtownshire, on August , 1995 – was exceeded last night.

Tomorrow could also become Scotland’s hottest day of the year if temperatures creep above the 30C (86F) seen on June 8 at Achnagart, Ross-shire. Bonnie Diamond of the Met Office said: ‘The country is certainly well placed to challenge a couple of records.

‘The combination of hot air coming up from the Continent and clear skies means things were due to remain pretty hot on Tuesday night.’

Forecasters said the warmth was likely to trigger dramatic overnight thunderstorms but these are expected to die out this morning, leaving a warm, bright day for most of Scotland, with temperatures comfortably in the mid- 0s.

However, the heat here is eclipsed by the sweltering conditions in England, where the record UK July temperature – 36.7C (98F) seen in Brighton in 015 – could be exceeded. The mercury is expected to hit 38C (100F) in London tomorrow.

On Friday, a cold front will take the edge off temperatures for most of Scotland while the North-east could hold on to the heat.
