IS THE TIPPLE TO YOUR FANCY, SIR?

Royal in high spirits on Highland tour

- By John Paul Breslin and Sam Walker

HE’S known to enjoy a dram of an evening.

But Prince Charles looked as if he might topple from his tipple as he joked around during a tour of a Highland distillery yesterday.

The Duke of Rothesay, as he is known while in Scotland, was in a jovial mood as he visited Wolfburn Distillery near Thurso, Caithness.

Charles had a sniff of a 3.5 per cent ABV ‘new make’ – freshly distilled spirit yet to be matured in a cask – which he described as being a ‘very good one for clearing the nose’.

He was also offered a dram of Northland Single Malt Scotch Whisky and, asked if he would like a glass, joked: ‘Yes please – I’m not going to drink it out of the bottle.’

The Prince then took a sniff and a gulp of the whisky before pulling a face, much to the amusement of his guides. Charles was also given a demonstration of the bottling process before filling his own container with Aurora whisky.

The glass was engraved with HRH The Duke of Rothesay to mark the occasion. During his trip to the Highlands, Charles also toured Scotland’s largest offshore wind farm, unveiling a plaque to mark its official opening.

He described the Beatrice Offshore Wind Farm, near a former oil field in the Moray Firth, as an ‘engineering feat’.

The 84-turbine development will be able to power up to 450,000 homes and will generate £2.4billion for the UK economy over its lifespan, with £1billion expected to come to Scotland.
