Heavenly on a stairway, Emma the Little Woman

- TV & Radio Reporter By Eleanor Sharples

POISED in pink among a sea of pastels, Emma Watson is every bit the blushing debutante in her latest role.

Fans were given a glimpse of the actress, 29, in the eagerly awaited film adaptation of coming-of-age classic Little Women.

Clips from the trailer suggest the film will not stray too far from Louisa May Alcott’s 1868 tale of sisters growing up in the American Civil War.

The film opens with the four March girls, walking arm-in-arm through the snow in the midst of the New England winter. Miss Watson, who plays sensible sister Meg, swaps her Hogwarts robes for lace and a flower crown as she is pictured in wedded bliss.

She is joined by Irish actress Saoirse Ronan, 25, who stars as hot-headed Jo. Meanwhile Florence Pugh, 23, plays youngest sister Amy, and Eliza Scanlen, 20, appears as loving Beth.

In one scene, the girls are seen laughing hysterically after Jo accidentally cuts out a large chunk of Meg’s hair – much to the preening sister’s disgust. Viewers are also teased with clips of rising star and Oscar nominee Timothee Chalamet, 23, who plays brooding Laurie, the object of Jo’s affections. Also in the cast are Meryl Streep, in the role of wealthy Aunt March, as well as James Norton and Laura Dern.

The film, directed by US actress and filmmaker Greta Gerwig, 36, was shot in Massachusetts. Chalamet and Miss Ronan return as co-stars after they performed opposite each other in Miss Gerwig’s Oscar-nominated film Lady Bird. In an interview with Vanity Fair last month, Miss Gerwig told how the book had become ‘the landscape of [her] inner-life’.

Little Women was first adapted for the big screen in 1933, starring Katharine Hepburn as Jo, while a popular 1994 version casted Winona Ryder in the role.

This latest adaptation is set for release in cinemas in January.
