DAVID LEAN’S fact-based drama stars his wife, Ann Todd, as Madeleine Smith, the respectable Glaswegian tried for the murder of her French lover in 1857. It’s an intriguing case, explored with great style and flair, and it was resolved by a unique quirk of Scottish law.

THE German designer Dieter Rams has been working since the 1950s, and doesn’t hold back on his opinions in this stylishly presented new profile. Rams’s design philosophy of ‘less, but better’ is especially appealing in a world in which so many things are so needlessly confusing.

BLACK COMEDY Succession, 9pm, Sky Atlantic

THE strength of this US series lies in how it’s essentially a family drama about children trying to impress their dad — except that the children are now all messed-up adults, and they work for him. That’s never clearer than with the downtrodden Kendall, who finds fresh purpose in tonight’s new episode.

A PATIENT comes in for a Caesarean for her fifth child in this new episode, but her blood pressure is high. Is it nerves, the stress of already having four kids, or something else?
