Glenda Jackson ready for TV comeback, 27 years on

SHE was one of the greatest actors of her generation, retiring at the tender age of 56 to pursue a lengthy career in politics.

But, 27 years on, Glenda Jackson is preparing to return to TV screens for the first time and has been seen filming a new BBC drama in Scotland.

The double Oscar-winner, 83, will star as dementia sufferer Maud in the adaptation of bestsellin­g book Elizabeth is Missing, by Emma Healey.

She last acted on television in 1992’s The Secret Life Of Arnold Bax before quitting to become Labour MP for Hampstead and Highgate. She retired from the Commons in 2015.

Miss Jackson has already made her return to the stage, playing King Lear in a gender-swapped adaptation of the Shakespear­e tragedy in 2016 at the Old Vic. She has just finished reprising the role in New York.

She quit the stage in 1991 after her role in Mourning Becomes Electra. has not appeared on the big screen since 1990, when she played Queen Caroline in King Of The Wind.

The plot of the one-off, 90-minute BBC drama – expected to be screened early next year – sees Maud attempt to piece together what has happened to her best friend Elizabeth, convinced something awful has befallen her.

Miss Jackson said of her new TV role: ‘I am delighted to be making my return to television to play Maud, a character it’s impossible not to be charmed and moved by.’
