Last blast of summer on way

- By Paul Drury

DON’T put the barbecues away just yet – it looks like Scotland is set for a last blast of summer this weekend.

A high pressure system sitting over the South of the UK could help push temperatures up to 21C (70F) north of the Border on Friday and Saturday.

Matthew Box of the Met Office said: ‘Conditions are likely to be warmest in the South-east of England but Scotland will also see some sunny and warm weather. There is a brief, unsettled, period to come before the weekend.

‘Tuesday should be a fine day across most of Scotland, with only a few showers to report in the Northern Isles. It’s really not too bad for this time of year. Temperatures of 14-1 C ( 7- 9F) are just about average for the middle part of September.

‘Wednesday will see a bit more in the way of cloud but, with high pressure building, the picture is looking very promising for Friday and Saturday. A south easterly wind will bring drier air from the near continent.

‘Most of Scotland should see good sunny spells on Friday and it’s not until Saturday evening that we see cloud pushing into the West of Scotland.’

The Met Office said the path taken by Hurricane Umberto, which is heading away from the US into the Atlantic, will shape Britain’s weather for the end of the weekend.

Yesterday, the Aberdeenshire village of Braemar experienced a slight touch of overnight frost and colder nights can be expected as we approach the weekend.

The weekend heatwave in the south of England could bring in temperatures of 2 C (77F) in London.
