IT’S the most nail-biting drama since Bodyguard, with a twisting murdermystery plot that has captured the nation’s imagination.

The hunt to find out who killed human rights lawyer Hannah Roberts in the new BBC1 surveillance thriller The Capture is nearing its close, with the penultimate episode airing tonight.

The six-part series follows a disgraced exspecial forces soldier who is hunted by police after CCTV appears to show him attacking his barrister Miss Roberts.

As doubts emerge over the CCTV’s authenticity, and the cast of detectives, lawyers and spies are entangled in a web of lies, it becomes clear that all is not as it seems.

So, can you guess whodunnit?

THE SOLDIER

Working-class soldier Shaun Emery (Callum Turner) is back on civvy street after he wins his appeal against a conviction for murdering an unarmed Taliban fighter. He shares a kiss with his barrister Miss Roberts (Laura Haddock) before she goes missing and Emery is later arrested on suspicion of kidnapping her. Initial CCTV clearly shows him attacking her, while flashbacks seem to point to his guilt. But did someone tamper with the tapes?

THE TOP OFFICER

Slimy counterterrorism boss Danny Hart (Ben Miles) is the married lover of Detective Inspector Rachel Carey (Holliday Grainger), who leads the investigation into Miss Roberts’s death. As Hart’s methods come under scrutiny from DI Carey, (he even brands the victim a ‘silly b **** ’), the top cop begins to look shifty. When she asks, ‘If Shaun didn’t kill Hannah Roberts, then who did?’, he is lost for words.

THE MURDER COPS

Detective Constables Patrick Flynn (Cavan Clerkin) and Nadia Latif (Ginny Holder) were plodding members of DI Carey’s murder squad, until the pair shocked viewers by leaking classified CCTV footage of the attack online so it could be used in the investigation. DC Latif reports DI Carey for wanting to move Miss Roberts’s body to another mortuary. She then declared she had no choice as she took the detective’s car keys from her.

THE LAWYER

Human rights lawyer Charlie Hall (Barry Ward) worked alongside Miss Roberts on Emery’s initial case. He kept a low profile before showing up at the end of episode four, asking: ‘I imagine you’d like to know what the f*** is going on?’

THE MI5 ‘MOLE’

Suspected of being an MI5 agent, Detective Superintendent Gemma Garland (Lia Williams) is parachuted in to help DI Carey with her investigation, but it soon became clear she had her own mysterious agenda. Brushing off concerns the CCTV was tampered with, she puts as many obstacles as possible in the detective’s way before suspending her from the case. But what’s her motive?

SHADY CIA SPY

Frank Napier (Ron Perlman) is a shady CIA agent running a black op on British soil. Is he the mastermind behind the doctored CCTV? And was he bluffing when he quizzed Emery over Miss Roberts’s whereabouts? It’s clear he and DS Garland are in cahoots – but what are they plotting?
