Ay up, chuck! Yes it’s Strictly’s Shirley, the cha-cha-charlady

- By Jennifer Ruby and Eleanor Sharples

DOEsn’t she scrub up well! In rollers and headscarf, shirley Ballas looked more Hilda Ogden than head judge as she got ready for strictly on saturday night.

Hours later, there was no trace of the washerwoman look as the glamorous 59-year-old took her place on the panel.

the former ballroom dancer bore a striking resemblance to sharp-tongued Coronation street charlady Hilda as she gave her Instagram followers a peek into her BBC dressing room as she got ready for the live show.

Along with the rollers and pink net headscarf, she posed for a picture without makeup. Instead of Hilda’s flowery housecoat, she wore a floral print dressing gown.

After the tV show hair and make-up team performed their magic, Miss Ballas emerged later in a dazzling floor-length green gown

and matching cape with her glossy dark hair styled in loose waves.

It has been a sobering time for the judge, who recently revealed that she is to have her breast implants removed following a string of cancer diagnoses in her family.

the star, who said she feels ‘vulnerable’ to the disease as mammograms cannot properly check behind implants, is hoping to have the operation before the end of the series and is hoping not to miss any shows. Mike Bushell and partner Katya Jones put on an energetic performance with their quickstep to the Dexys Midnight Runners classic Come On Eileen.

And while they impressed the judges and viewers, Miss Jones took another tumble on the dancefloor – a week after she was forced to deny being drunk after falling over twice. this time, however, the dancer appeared to collapse to the floor in an emotional heap after the dance ended.

Bushell, who has admitted losing a stone since starting strictly, yesterday revealed that his body shape has ‘changed completely’ – and joked that he could even be underweight by the end of the series. the 53-year-old BBC sports presenter said he had carried a few extra pounds until the rigours of rehearsals. He said: ‘When I started strictly I was above my body mass index.

‘I was reasonably fit. I play fivea-side footy and a bit of tennis and run 5k... However I like my food and real ale and wine.

‘And so in your 50s that outweighs the exercise, until dancing that is. Dancing in terms of exercise is a different level. It reaches parts other sports do not reach.’ the effect on his physique has been so dramatic that last week he had to be remeasured by costume designers. Bushell added: ‘someone joked if I last until Halloween I might be underweight.’
