Player Ratings
MARK WILSON at Hampden
JON McLAUGHLIN
Precious little action to warm the goalkeeper on his first competitive cap as he was soaked to the bone while standing in isolation.
LIAM PALMER
The right-back displayed decent energy to get forward and link play, particularly before the conditions became farcical after the break.
MIKEY DEVLIN
Some light relief for the Aberdeen man after the difficulties of Moscow as he comfortably splashed his way through 90 minutes.
STUART FINDLAY
Simple header from a Ryan Christie corner provided a debut goal, having already lodged an assist for John McGinn’s hat-trick strike.
ANDY ROBERTSON
Sweeping cross-field pass set up Christie ahead of McGinn’s opener and the captain tried to urge Scotland to maintain their tempo as the match wore on.
SCOTT McTOMINAY
Picked up a booking for an aerial challenge on Nicola Nanni. The Manchester United midfielder’s terrific drive against the bar led to Lawrence Shankland’s goal.
JOHN McGINN
Powerful runs merited becoming the first Scotland player to score a first-half hat-trick since 1952, even if he cheekily nicked his first from Christie.
CALLUM McGREGOR
A calm and tidy 70-minute shift from the Celtic mainstay, who wasn’t deterred when the Hampden pitch became akin to a swimming pool. A persistent threat from both open play and set-pieces, he was important in building a decent margin against such dismal opposition.
LAWRENCE SHANKLAND
Handed his first international start, the Dundee United striker marked it with a simple goal having earlier been denied by San Marino goalkeeper Aldo Simoncini.
JAMES FORREST
Worked away to fashion space and opportunities for both him and his team-mates, primarily from the left flank, but didn’t get in on the scoring act.
SUBSTITUTES
Johnny Russell (McGregor 70), Stuart Armstrong (McGinn 70). Not used: Marshall, MacGillivray, Mulgrew, Fraser, Gallagher, Morgan, O’Donnell, Taylor.
STEVE CLARKE
Will be pleased by the persistence shown by his team under the deluge in Glasgow and can only hope it begins a rebuilding of confidence prior to the play-offs.
SAN MARINO (4-2- -1): Simoncini; Battistini, Censoni, Brolli, D’Addario (Grandoni 46); Mularoni, Golinucci; Gasperoni, Berardi (Ceccaroli 80), Giardi (Hirsch 46); Nanni.
