Southgate’s warning after Maddison caught in casino
GARETH SOUTHGATE has warned his players there is no hiding place after James Maddison was caught in a casino just hours after withdrawing from the England squad. A national newspaper showed a picture of the Leicester midfielder gambling while the national team were losing 2-1 to the Czech Republic in Prague last Friday night. Maddison, 22, withdrew from Southgate’s squad the day before due to illness — but still appeared well enough to go to the casino the following night. Southgate revealed that the player texted him on Saturday night to inform him of the story — albeit he didn’t confirm if he had apologised. But he did warn his stars that he watches their every move, even when not under the international umbrella. ‘I know pretty much everything about all of my players, I watch every minute of their football, whether live or downloaded,’ said the England boss. ‘I speak to their club managers, with Under-21s manager Aidy (Boothroyd) and all the coaches of the junior teams. ‘We never know absolutely everything, but we have a clear picture of every player, that’s the due diligence we should always do.’ Southgate will talk with Maddison after tonight’s Euro 2020 qualifier against Bulgaria in Sofia — and re-emphasise the responsibilities that come with being an international player. ‘I’m sure he recognises now that, when you’re involved with England, there is a different sort of spotlight on you,’ said Southgate. ‘For any young player coming into the squad, they probably aren’t as aware of that.’
