Emma THOmPSON has urged a luxury restaurant to reinstate a waiter who was suspended after asking her for a selfie.
The Oscar-winning actress had politely declined to have her photo taken while dining at fivestar hotel Browns in mayfair as she did not want to impose on her celebrity guests.
But she was said to be horrified to learn that the next day the senior waiter was suspended until further notice for breaking protocol.
Dame Emma, 60, rang up the general manager and urged the hotel to rethink its decision, according to The Sunday Times. It is not yet known whether her intervention proved successful.
The star has spoken previously about her aversion to selfies, telling reporters in 2014 that she ‘wouldn’t dream of taking a selfie with anyone’, although she has posed with fans who request pictures on redcarpet occasions.
Rocco Forte Hotels, which owns the hotel, said it had a ‘strict policy of respecting guests’ privacy which applies to all staff members’.
Browns said: ‘Caring a great deal for the privacy and wellbeing of both team members and guests, we are unable to make further comment.’ The incident occurred whilst Dame
Emma was dining with celebrity friends earlier this month at the hotel, which is one of London’s oldest and dates back to 1837.
many notable guests have walked through its doors, including agatha Christie and Oscar Wilde, and it was the location of the first successful telephone call in Europe by alexander Graham Bell.
In the 2014 interview, Dame Emma made her views on selfies clear. She said: ‘I wouldn’t dream of taking a selfie with anyone. God almighty. That’s to take narcissism to its unspeakable extremes. No, get a life everyone.’
Other celebrities are known to share her views. Fellow actress Dame maggie Smith, 84, said: ‘What’s awful is it used to be just autographs, but now everyone wants photographs.’
