Two-goal McHugh insists best is yet to come from Morton

- LEWIS STEELE reports from Cappielow

BOB McHUGH believes Saturday’s win against Inverness can be a springboard for Morton to start climbing the table after a below-par start to the season. The striker netted a goal in each half to help David Hopkin’s men to a 2-1 win at Cappielow, which saw Morton move to seventh in the Championship standings. And McHugh hopes this is the start of a positive run for the club, despite a tough week which sees them host Ayr tomorrow night and then head to Dundee on Friday. ‘I’d agree we were probably in a false position in the table,’ said a buoyant

McHugh, who now has eight goals for the season. ‘It’s not happened for us in the last few weeks but this was a performance we’ve been due. ‘It’s a great start for what is a massive week for the club so hopefully we can get another home win on Tuesday and Friday will take care of itself.

Morton’s fourth win of the season was arguably their most impressive, a fine counter-attacking performance dispatching a Caley Thistle side who would have gone second with three points. But if Hopkin’s men are to climb the table, they will need to improve their away form, given they are yet to take a single point outside of Greenock this season. Renfrewshire rivals St Mirren are the only other side yet to register an away point in Scotland’s top four leagues. Inverness Caley Thistle boss John Robertson was left frustrated by his team’s failure to take their chances in a game they dominated. ‘We threw away two points last week (in the 2-2 draw with Alloa) and another three today,’ said Robertson, who saw his team draw level through Mitchell Curry, only to concede in the 81st minute. ‘It’s annoying. I thought we had control of the game — I’d have been disappointed with even one point but we were guilty at both ends of the park. ‘We didn’t take our chances and mistakes cost us at the back. It’s a slackness that’s crept into our play. It’s something we have to fix fast.’
