Corruption ban for Bangladesh skipper Shakib
Bangladesh captain shakib al hasan has been hit with a two-year ban as part of a global crackdown on corruption. shakib, skipper of his country in Tests and Twenty20, is one of the biggest names on the white-ball scene and is ranked the world’s top all-rounder. he was the third highest scorer at the last Cricket World Cup, smashing 121 against england in Cardiff.
he has been punished for failing to report multiple requests for inside information from an alleged bookmaker, deepak aggarwal.
a year of the 32-year-old’s ban — after he accepted the sanction — will be suspended, meaning he will be available on October 20, 2020, just in time for next year’s Twenty20 World Cup.
he pleaded guilty to three charges under the ICC’s anticorruption code relating to matches in the 2018 Indian Premier league and a tri-series involving sri lanka, Zimbabwe and Bangladesh.
‘I am extremely sad to have been banned from the game I love, but I accept my sanction,’ said shakib. ‘The ICC anti-corruption unit is reliant on players to play a central part in the fight against corruption and I didn’t do my duty.
‘I want cricket to be corruptionfree and I am looking forward to working with the ICC to ensure young players don’t make the same mistake I did.’
shakib was interviewed twice by the authorities this year — in January and august. In the second meeting he admitted three counts of failing to report approaches.
alex Marshall, the former police constable who heads the ICC’s anti-corruption unit (aCU), said: ‘shakib al hasan is a highly experienced international cricketer. he has attended education sessions and knows his obligations. he should have reported each of these approaches. shakib has accepted his errors and cooperated fully with the investigation.’
shakib told the aCU that he had neither acted upon nor provided information — or received any reward — following several Whats-app chats with aggarwal, despite his contact asking, after a match on January 19, 2018: ‘do we work in this or I wait til the IPl?’
during the IPl later that year, aggarwal asked shakib if a certain player would be in the side.
