MArGUErITE PATTEN (1915-2015). The Bath-born food writer was the author of more than 170 books. During World War II she worked for the Ministry of Food to advise the public on how to make the most of their rations and presented the BBC’s weekly radio show kitchen Front, teaching recipes using powdered egg and spam. MArTIN BALSAM (1919-1996). Described as ‘the quintessen­tial character actor’, the New York-born star played the private detective Arbogast in Hitchcock’s 1960 thriller Psycho. When Hitchcock was directing screen tests of his protégée, Tippi Hedren, he had Balsam flown in from New York to play opposite her, saying he could think of no other actor sensitive enough to bring out the best in the actress.
