FORGOTTEN TREASURE TROVE DOWN SOUTH

-

THE signing of Mohamed Elyounoussi might just open up a whole new market for both of the Old Firm clubs to explore. You have to wonder — just how many more multi-million pound players are sitting on the shelves gathering dust down south? Elyounoussi has been a revelation for Celtic since joining on loan from Southampton, who paid £16million for his services just over a year ago. Someone asked me the other day if I remember playing against him in the Europa League a few years ago when he was at Molde. I’ve got to be honest, as soon as anyone mentions Molde to me, my only thoughts are about the instant rage that came over me when I was subbed that night! By my own admission, not my finest hour. It’s one where you look back and laugh and think: ‘What was I doing?’. In a little quirk of fate, both Elyounoussi and myself scored home and away in each of those games in 2015. He was a decent player back then — but it’s clear he’s gone on to a whole new level. Saturday’s brace against Hibs now makes it seven goals in seven games. The best compliment you could pay him is the fact that Scott Sinclair is now firmly the forgotten man at Parkhead. Elyounoussi’s form — along with others — means one of Celtic’s top earners on 30-odd grand a week is sitting twiddling his thumbs. Sinclair hasn’t started a game this season, with his six appearances all coming off the bench — that’s a shame for such a talented player. If a mutual parting of the ways comes in January, Celtic should reinvest those wages in a package which secures the permanent capture of Elyounoussi.
