On nOveMbeR 4, 1954, i was demobilised after completing my two years’ national Service. The following day, when the news became public, people came out onto the streets, lit bonfires and let off fireworks — a touching tribute which has persisted right up to the present day. This year, 2019, will be the 65th anniversary of that amazing day, and i am making a nationwide appeal for restraint. i want to make it clear that there is no need for extra exuberance or extravagance as the usual displays have always been perfectly adequate and always greatly appreciated. May i take this opportunity to thank everyone for their support over these past years.
