It’s game Ted and match!

Andy and Kim name son Teddy Barron Murray

- By John Paul Breslin

WITH a Grand Slam winner for a father and a top coach for a grandmother, Andy Murray’s baby boy – named Teddy – has a good chance of becoming a bit of a whizz at tennis.

However, he has already inherited something rather interesting from his father’s side – a middle name that is a family tradition.

Sir Andy has revealed his newborn son’s full name is Teddy Barron Murray. The baby’s middle name is said to have been passed down from a long line of men in the Murray family, including the two-time Wimbledon champion.

Teddy, Sir Andy’s third child with wife Kim, was born in London during a 12-day break the Scots ace took after winning last month’s European Open in Antwerp.

Sir Andy said: ‘The baby came five or six days after we got back from Antwerp. It’s been good. It’s just busy. We’ve got three under four now and two dogs, so you’ve got to keep an eye out all the time but it’s been good, sleeping fine. Everyone’s healthy.’

Of his son’s names, Sir Andy said: ‘The middle name got in there. I don’t actually love the name… my dad’s middle name was Barron, his dad was Barron, my granddad’s dad, so I kept that. But Teddy, my wife liked that so she chose it.’

While he admitted there was a bit of jealousy when his younger daughter was born, the arrival of his son has not caused any issues.

He added: ‘This time has been really good. When we went from one to two [children], the first week or so was a bit... I don’t know, a bit of jealousy. But this time they’ve been brilliant.’

Teddy has already been described by his grandmother Judy as a ‘lovely, happy, healthy baby boy’.

Speaking on BBC Radio Scotland, she said: ‘It’s lovely news, lovely to have a little boy to go with the two little girls.’

The couple, both aged 32, already have two daughters, Sophia, three, and two-yearold Edie.

As yet the Murrays have not shared an image of the latest addition to their family.

However, like his sisters, Teddy is already a firm favourite with his great-grandparents.

Great-grandfather Roy Erskine, 88, who lives in Sir Andy’s home town of Dunblane, Perthshire, said his wife Shirley, 84, travelled to the couple’s home in Oxshott, Surrey, to see the baby.

Mr Erskine said: ‘I’ve seen photos. I’m just glad it’s over. They’re doing fine.’

The arrival of the baby comes as three-time Grand Slam winner Sir Andy returns from hip surgery.

After his win in Antwerp last month, he joked he needed to get back on the road because his ever-expanding family was getting ‘out of control’.

He also joked that the fact he and his wife were expecting another baby was down to the amount of time he had spent at home with her while recovering from surgery. In an interview,

Sir Andy spoke about taking paternity leave in order to help out at home following the birth of Teddy.

The two-time Olympic gold medallist said: ‘I’ll definitely be taking some time off as we’ll be pretty busy with three children under the age of four.

‘I’ll try to be around as much as possible in the next year – but I know my tennis career won’t go on for ever, so there will need to be a balance between me maximising the next few years and spending quality time with my family.’
