Conman tricked me into handing over £6k savings
CHILDMINDER Naika Butler, 33, lost £6,125 to scammers in June last year.
She had received a text supposedly from NatWest about a potentially fraudulent £300 payment from her account.
The message included a phone number said to be for the bank’s fraud team.
When she called, ‘Jeremy’ said he would send a code to her phone to let him transfer the money to a safe account.
In reality Miss Butler, of London, was talking to a fraudster. And when the mother of three visited her NatWest branch, her savings were gone. The thief had also hiked her overdraft to £8,000 and taken out a £9,000 loan, putting her in £17,000 of debt. NatWest wrote these off, but refused to refund Miss Butler’s savings. However, after Money Mail contacted the bank it agreed to
also pay her savings back in full.
