How to make sure your vote counts...

Q: How many Scots traditionally vote in general elections and how do they do it?

A: In the snap general election in 2017, 2.65million Scots voted – which is a turnout of 66.4 per cent. This was down significantly on 2015, when 2.9million people voted, giving a turnout of 71.1 per cent. In 2017, 19.4 per cent of Scots were registered to vote by post, which was 1.8 percentage points higher than 2015. Scotland also had the equal largest proportion of postal voters of any UK nation.

Q: Why was turnout down in 2017 and why could it fall again?

A: Experts blamed wet weather and voter fatigue. Some fear the weather could play an even greater role in the upcoming election. The short daylight hours could reduce the voting window for some vulnerable groups, while it is feared some may be more interested in Christmas preparations and the office party season.

Q: What are the alternatives to voting at a ballot box?

A: Anyone in England, Scotland and Wales can apply for a postal vote and they do not need to give a reason. The application form can be downloaded at the Electoral Commission website and must be sent to the electoral registration team at the relevant local council by 5pm on November 26. Another option is to ask someone to place a proxy vote on their behalf. A reason must be provided, such as going on holiday, or being unable to get to the polling station. The deadline is December 4.
