World’s No1 whisky fan
His £11m collection is record
FOR more than 20 years he has collected rare whiskies.
Now a Vietnamese businessman has entered the record books as the owner of the world’s most valuable collection.
Viet Nguyen Dinh Tuan’s extraordinary assortment includes 535 bottles of some of the rarest Scottish and Japanese whiskies.
Together, they are estimated to be worth almost £11million.
The 50-year-old, from Ho Chi Minh City, is also the proud owner of a complete set of the Macallan Fine & Rare 60-year-old, which is widely regarded as one of the finest whiskies in the world.
A single bottle of the 1926 Macallan Fine and Rare recently changed hands for £1.2million at auction, making it the most expensive bottle of whisky ever sold. Only 40 bottles of the Macallan 1926, taken from the distillery’s cask number 263 in 1986, were released.
Macallan asked pop artist Sir Peter Blake, who created the cover of the Beatles’ Sergeant Pepper album, to design a label for a dozen bottles. A further 12 had their labels designed by Italian painter Valerio Adami, while the rest were given the ‘Fine and Rare’ labelling.
Impressively, Mr Viet owns one of each design.
Experts estimated that his collection is worth around £10.8million, and it has now been named the most valuable in existence by Guinness World Records.
Mr Viet said: ‘Whisky collecting has been my life’s passion. Every spare moment I get, I’m searching auction sites and trading websites to find famous and rare whiskies from around the world.
‘As for my collection, I have no intention of selling any of it. Not one bottle. In fact, I’ll continue to hunt for more old and rare bottles and add to and enrich it.’
Asked about the record, he said: ‘My first reaction was one of surprise. However, I’m really happy and feel honoured to be recognised by Guinness World Records as the owner of the world’s most valuable whisky collection.’
Andy Simpson, of Rare Whisky 101, said: ‘We were gobsmacked, not to mention a little envious, when we realised the breadth and depth of Mr Viet’s collection.
‘It’s a stunning example of one person’s passion and desire to seek out the finest, rarest bottles of whisky in the world.
‘Mr Viet is, what we believe to be one of possibly three collectors in the world to own all three variants of the legendary Macallan 1926 bottling, which recently broke the world record.
‘That said, it may well be the case that Mr Viet is the only collector in the world to have three bottles.’
