Tony Archer star dies at 80
COLIN Skipp, who played Tony Archer for more than 40 years on The Archers, has died at 80.
The long-runningBBC Radio 4 soap said Skipp, who featured in many of its most memorable storylines – including the death of his son John in a tractor accident, ‘will be greatly missed’. The actor, pictured above, starred as farmer Tony Archer from 1967 to 2013.
David Troughton took over the character, who runs Bridge Farm near the fictional village of Ambridge, when Skipp had a series of heart attacks and retired.
Archers editor Jeremy Howe said his ‘wonderful voice... made Tony distinctive, adding: ‘He was Colin’s creation.’
Pat Gallimore, who plays Tony’s wife, Pat, said: ‘I have 40 years of memories to look back on with happiness.’
The news comes after Edward Kelsey, who played Joe Grundy in The Archers for 34 years, died at 88 in April.
