Tony Archer star dies at 80

COLIN Skipp, who played Tony Archer for more than 40 years on The Archers, has died at 80.

The long-run­ningBBC Ra­dio 4 soap said Skipp, who fea­tured in many of its most mem­o­rable sto­ry­lines – in­clud­ing the death of his son John in a trac­tor ac­ci­dent, ‘will be greatly missed’. The ac­tor, pic­tured above, starred as farmer Tony Archer from 1967 to 2013.

David Troughton took over the char­ac­ter, who runs Bridge Farm near the fic­tional vil­lage of Am­bridge, when Skipp had a se­ries of heart at­tacks and re­tired.

Archers ed­i­tor Jeremy Howe said his ‘won­der­ful voice... made Tony dis­tinc­tive, adding: ‘He was Colin’s cre­ation.’

Pat Gal­limore, who plays Tony’s wife, Pat, said: ‘I have 40 years of mem­o­ries to look back on with hap­pi­ness.’

The news comes af­ter Ed­ward Kelsey, who played Joe Grundy in The Archers for 34 years, died at 88 in April.
