Fire-hit school shut until 2020
PUPILS will not return to a fire-damaged school until after the Christmas holidays, council officials announced yesterday.
Students and staff were evacuated as 70 firefighters tackled the blaze at Peebles High School at lunchtime on Thursday.
Crews returned to the building yesterday to assess the structure and dampen down any remaining hot spots.
No one was injured in the fire but Tracey Logan, chief executive of Scottish Borders Council, said there was ‘serious damage’ to the building, adding it ‘wouldn’t be safe or practical to open’ until a full damage assessment had been carried out.
There are 14 days of the school term left, and classes may be held in other buildings, with online classes that can be taken at home.
