MERSEY MANIA AS SILVA LANDS ANFIELD TIE

- By KIERAN GILL

NOT content with facing each other in the Premier League tomorrow, Liverpool and Everton were last night drawn together in the FA Cup third round. Both games are at Anfield. It is a nightmare draw for under-pressure Everton boss Marco Silva — if he is still in charge when the tie takes place at the beginning of January. Everton have not beaten Liverpool at Anfield since 1999. Virgil van Dijk made his debut for Liverpool in the third round against Everton in 2018 — a header from the £75million defender saw Jurgen Klopp’s side win 2-1. Former Anfield defender and

Sky pundit Jamie Carragher was quick to react to the draw, joking: ‘Should Jurgen (Klopp) go with a first-choice XI or the team that’s played Carabao Cup?’ Manchester City were handed a favourable home tie against League Two Port Vale, while Manchester United face a tricky trip to Wolves — who knocked them out last season. Jose Mourinho’s Tottenham head to Middlesbrough, whose manager Jonathan Woodgate is currently fighting to hang on to his job with the club hovering above the Championship relegation zone in 20th place. Leeds travel to Arsenal, while AFC Fylde — the lowest-ranked side definitely through to the third round — have been rewarded with a trip to Premier League Sheffield United. Arsenal legend Tony Adams was in good form making the draw live on the BBC alongside former Manchester City man Micah Richards last night. Before the draw began, Adams joked how he once infamously performed the same task after spending the day in the pub. ‘Twenty-six years ago, I was absolutely drunk when I did this draw,’ said Adams. ‘So I’m really delighted to be here sober. Good mental health!’ Along with National League side Fylde, there are four other nonLeague clubs left in the FA Cup. The winner of the replay between Boston and Rochdale will host Newcastle. If Hartlepool can overcome Exeter in their replay, they will head to Oxford. Eastleigh face Barnsley if they get past Crewe, while Rotherham host Championship side Hull after beating Solihull Moors 4-3 last night. All of the third round ties will be played between Friday, January 3 and Monday, January 6, with TV games to be announced.
