LEAPING into the air with joy, Boris Johnson celebrates after the Conservative leader finds out he’s on course for a massive majority.

Behind-the-scenes pictures capture the moment when the Prime Minister heard the exit poll at 10pm on Thursday night.

Mr Johnson, his girlfriend Carrie Symonds and his closest aides watched as the results unfolded on a television wheeled into Lady Thatcher’s old study – as the couple’s Jack Russell, Dilyn, sat at a chair nearby.

On the table in front of them, bottles of beer, cups of tea and tubs of sweets can be seen. As the election continued, Mr Johnson checked his phone for results.

Beneath an oil painting of the Iron Lady, aide Dominic Cummings toiled away on a laptop.

Later, Mr Johnson headed for the count in his constituency of Uxbridge and South Ruislip, staying until the result was finally announced at 3.4 am. Later, a victory rally was held for party workers at the Queen Elizabeth II Centre, where the celebrations carried on into the morning.

Then on Friday night, Mr Johnson and Miss Symonds celebrated his return to Downing Street with a chicken curry which she had made in their flat at No 11.

They toasted with red wine – most probably very welcome since the Prime Minister had not drunk alcohol throughout the General Election campaign.

After that, it was on to Evening Standard owner Evgeny Lebedev’s Christmas party, attended by Sir Mick Jagger, Princess Beatrice, David Walliams, actor Matt Smith and David Cameron.
