Jags star Jones keen to learn from master Miller

- LEWIS STEELE reports from Firhill

ALEX JONES insists he can learn a lot from his veteran strike partner Kenny Miller after claiming his first goal of the season in Saturday’s home win against Inverness Caley Thistle. The 25-year-old netted the opener, with Steven Saunders and Dario Zanatta also on target for Ian McCall’s men to negate James Keatings’ strike for the visitors. And the Englishman, who has been plagued with injuries since his arrival at Firhil, says advice from former Rangers and Scotland striker Miller is crucial. ‘Since I’ve been here, I’ve picked up a lot of things from Kenny,’ said Jones. ‘His name speaks for itself. He’s had a wonderful career, so if I can just keep learning from him and try to pick out little bits of advice he gives me, that’s only going to benefit me. ‘This was my first goal for the club. So obviously I’m delighted to get off the mark. It’s been very frustrating the last few months being injured, but that goal makes all the hours in the treatment room worthwhile. ‘It was a great ball from Reece (Cole), my touch got me in on goal and then one-on-one — I didn’t even think about it, and it was in the back of the net.’ The former Bradford City striker was substituted late on to vast applause from a Firhill crowd who haven’t really had the chance to see what he is about, given he had a three-month lay-off with an ankle injury. But Jones is ready to kick on with the Jags, who have moved up to eighth with back-to-back wins. It was also their fifth win in the 11 league games McCall has overseen since his return to the club in late September. ‘Unless you are around the environment every day, you don’t realise how difficult it is being injured,’ added Jones. ‘It is lonely and difficult. I’m just glad that’s behind me now. ‘It’s time to push on and show everyone what I’m about. ‘That’s the first time we’ve had back-to-back wins all season, so we’ve got to keep building and putting in good performances.’
