Kris Boyd, who said the Englishman would be perfect for his old club. Formerly assistant to Clarke and still a member of the Scotland manager’s backroom staff with the national team, Dyer stayed on when former Juventus, Chelsea and Italy No 2 Alessio arrived in the summer. He was sounded out about stepping up to manager following Clarke’s move but decided he wasn’t ready.

Sportsmail understands, however, that the Kilmarnock board are hopeful of seeing him impress as caretaker and convince himself that it’s time for a promotion. ‘There’s no doubt Alex Dyer knows the football club,’ said Boyd. ‘He’s been there for a number of years now. ‘I don’t know what Alex wants going forward, whether he wants to be a manager or not. ‘But he will be organised, the players will know exactly what they are doing and it’s a good opportunity for him to get smiles on the players’ faces and get them enjoying their football again. ‘That’s what Alex is all about and I’m sure, short term, Kilmarnock’s performances will improve — and that might be Alex’s interview process. ‘If he’s given the nod to take the club forward, that would be something that would interest him. ‘Having worked with him, I know what he’s all about and I’m sure he would relish the opportunity.’ Alessio’s dismissal was confirmed in a brief statement which read: ‘The Kilmarnock Football Club Limited can today announce that Angelo Alessio has been relieved of his position as manager. ‘Everyone at the club would like to thank Angelo for his efforts during his time with Kilmarnock and we wish him every success for the future. ‘Alex Dyer will take charge of first-team duties on an interim basis. ‘We will provide a further update for supporters in due course.’
