Top flight in darts... now for Formula One
WHAT is the big deal about a woman, Fallon Sherrock, beating men at the PDC World Darts Championships (Mail)? Darts is a game, not a sport, where a man has no obvious advantage against a woman. It is not as if it is a running race or a boxing match where a man’s superior speed and strength make a difference. For goodness’ sake, we have had two female Prime Ministers, so a game of arrows should not be making headlines. In horse racing, female jockeys ride against their male counterparts without any allowances. Strength is no real advantage, horsemanship is. In the U.S., women have made breakthroughs in high levels of motor sport. There is no reason why a woman won’t be successful in Formula One. The only surprise about Fallon’s darts victories is that it hasn’t happened before.
DAVID PATRICK MOORE,

I AM so pleased Fallon Sherrock has done so well in the PDC Darts Championship. It proves what I have known for many years: women can be ruthless darts players. My late mother, Doris, was an exceptional player with a brain like a computer that could work out the best sequence to finish the game on a double. My father would take advantage of this fact and in the summer my parents would visit public houses in the Kent countryside. If there were a couple of men playing darts, he would ask if they fancied a game against him and his partner. Seeing the partner was a woman, they always agreed, visualising an easy match with a free pint each at the end. Alas for them, the free drinks went to my parents.
