Boxing Day horror: Car hits family of 11 on Millionaires’ Row

- By Kumail Jaffer

SEVEN people were injured after a car careered into a family as they walked to a restaurant.

Witnesses said bodies were left ‘sprawled’ on the pavement following the crash late on Thursday afternoon.

The family of 11 are understood to have been walking in Bearsden, Dunbartonshire, to a nearby Italian restaurant at 4.50pm when the incident happened.

After mounting the kerb, the Land Rover hit the group before colliding head-on with a parked Jaguar F-Pace.

Four family members are said to have been saved from injury because they were behind the parked car as the Land Rover mounted the pavement in the exclusive street.

Neighbours heard screams and ran to help the family, before eight police cars arrived, along with ambulances, to take the injured to hospital.

The seven people injured in the smash included a 60-year-old woman who last night remained in a critical condition.

The 64-year-old driver of the Land Rover was taken to Glasgow Royal Infirmary as a precaution.

The car appeared to have struck a wall near a bend, leaving debris over a 20-yard stretch of road.

One eyewitness, who asked not to be named, said they found out about the accident from their young daughter.

He said: ‘She heard screaming outside and we went to look. There were loads of people out, and bodies were sprawled all over the floor. We were ushered inside quickly by police, then they set up a cordon.’

Another resident added: ‘A parked car took the brunt of the impact after the first seven casualties and probably saved more of them from being hurt.’

The owner of the Jaguar – which was written off – declined to comment yesterday, saying only that his car ‘was completely totalled’. Police confirmed that two women, aged 21 and 65, and a boy of 15 are in a serious but stable condition; a 60-year-old woman is in a critical condition; and three others suffered minor injuries. One neighbour who helped tend to the victims before paramedics arrived said: ‘We did our best and tried to help. I desperately hope everything is okay.’

Another resident said the family were ‘lovely’ and ‘very tight-knit’.

Members of the family, who live in Manse Road, where the inci

dent happened, declined to comment yesterday.

The road, which earlier this month was named the most expensive street in Glasgow, has a sharp turn just after New Kilpatrick Parish Church. It has been called a ‘rat run’ by locals, and its junction with Milngavie Road has been described as ‘extremely dangerous’.

A Scottish Ambulance Service spokesman said: ‘Seven ambulances, a paramedic response unit, our special operations response team and the trauma team were deployed to the scene.

‘In total, seven patients were transported to hospital: five patients to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital, one 15-yearold patient to the Royal Hospital for Sick Children, and one patient was taken to Glasgow Royal Infirmary.’

Inspector William Graham, of the Road Policing Unit, said: ‘We’re appealing for anyone who might have witnessed this incident or saw the grey Land Rover just before the incident happened to contact us.’

No arrests have been made in connection with the incident.
