AT RIGHT TIME FOR WARRIORS

-

just that; they perform to a level irrespective of who they are playing against.

Jones has only to look forward in the Warriors team to see a player that does this very well. When did you last see Jonny Gray have a bad game? It doesn’t matter who he is playing for, his consistency is phenomenal and his ‘bad’ game is still about 85 per cent of his ‘good’ game.

Up until this season, Jones has probably hit only 50 per cent of the levels he hit in that Calcutta Cup match for Glasgow — and that is probably being quite generous.

The Scotstoun faithful are only now seeing what they thought they were getting two years ago, and his break last week to set up Ali Price for a try against Edinburgh was classic Jones from that time.

Now he needs to back up that performance with another at Murrayfield today. I bumped into him as he was arriving at Scotstoun before the match against La Rochelle and he is in great shape physically.

He is a big man, bigger than he looks on television and when you combine that bulk with the pace he has, it is all going for him.

One criticism I had of him a couple of years ago was that his distribution wasn’t the best.

Against Ireland, he was through on the full-back with Hogg outside him — but threw a shocker.

However, it looks like he has worked on this part of his game as his passing has been slick these past few weeks. Currently, centre is a position where Scotland are blessed with so much talent.

There is no doubt, though, that Gregor Townsend will be thrilled that Jones is showing some of his old form again because he moves right to the top of the list of centres when he is playing at his absolute best.

One player who was near the top of that list not that long ago is opposite Jones today and that is Mark Bennett.

Fresh after signing a new contract this week to keep him at Edinburgh, Bennett should use this stage to remind everyone that Jones is not the only former Scotland outside-centre who scored some big tries for them back in the day and is also back to form and looking to reignite his career.

Bennett v Jones is the match-up I am looking forward to watching today — and so will the national coach.
