FIVE THINGS WE LEARNED FROM THE SPFL THIS WEEKEND

- CALUM McCLURKIN

ARFIELD IS KEEPING RANGERS IN THE RACE

SCOTT ARFIELD seems to be the man that is single handedly keeping Rangers in this title race. The midfielder scored the only goal in the Ibrox men’s edgy 1-0 victory over Livingston. His goals have been vital to Steven Gerrard of late as Arfield has scored four times in Rangers’ three last games. He is one of the few players in Light Blue to find the winter break to be beneficial.

CELTIC GRIND IT OUT ON THE ROAD AGAIN

A SEVENTH away game in their nine matches since returning from the winter break almost took its toll on Celtic yesterday. Neil Lennon’s side looked a little leggy but were able to grind out a 2-1 win at Pittodrie. Winning at a tricky venue, despite not playing at their best amidst a gruelling schedule is a combination that delivers titles. Celtic look well on their way to nine-in-a-row.

MULLIN MAKES A VALUABLE POINT

A PINPOINT low cross from Josh Mullin for Billy Mckay to tap home in stoppage-time earned a point for Ross County. The hosts were outplayed in the first half by St Johnstone in Dingwall but Mullin (below), like all creative wide players when on song, produced a moment of magic in the 1-1 draw. That point sees the Staggies move seven clear of Hearts.

ACCIES ARE JUST UNABLE TO HANG ON

HAMILTON have scored in each of their last seven games but have been unable to win any of them. Accies had a 2-0 advantage at Tynecastle on Saturday but the ten men could not hang on for the win. During this seven-match winless run, Brian Rice’s side have remarkably led in five of them. They are starting games very strongly but tend to lose cheap goals later on.

ARBROATH SAVOUR A WINTER WONDERLAND

WHEN the harsh reality of winter kicks in, the pinch on the part-time clubs usually begins to tell in the Championship. Arbroath have defied expectations this season and, instead of tailing off, Dick Campbell’s side have found an extra gear. A 2-0 home win over Queen of the South was their third league success in a row and the Red Lichties sit in the top four.
