Basketball star’s ‘suicide’
A SCOTS basketball star shot himself with a handgun in a suspected suicide, investigators have revealed.
Robert Archibald, 39, was found dead at his home near Chicago on January 23. The 6ft 11in power forward and centre was the only Scot to play in America’s elite NBA and had been labelled a ‘trailblazer’.
Mr Archibald, from Paisley, Renfrewshire, played for Memphis Grizzlies, Phoenix Suns, Orlando Magic and Toronto Raptors from 2002 to 2004 before competing for Team GB at the London Olympics in 2012.
US Coroner Howard Cooper is investigating the death and yesterday told the Scottish Daily Mail: ‘We haven’t concluded our investigations yet but right now we’re treating it as a suspected suicide.’
His father Bobby, who skippered Scotland in the sport, said the star had gone through ‘a tough patch’.
