FOR many it was a Mother’s Day like no other – devoid of hugs, kisses or face-to-face contact.

As families across the country sent their love over video calls or behind glass doors, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge delivered a message of solidarity to the nation ‘at this difficult time’.

William and Kate led the celebrations online by sharing never-before-seen family snaps and pictures of a sweet home-made card by Prince George.

The colourful card, showing a yellow love-heart vase holding a bunch of tissue paper poppies, did something to brighten up the pandemic gloom, while joyous photos showed the duke and duchess happily fulfilling their parental piggyback duties.

In one Middleton family photo from 1982, Kate can be seen as a baby in her mother Carole’s arms. It was likely taken at the duchess’s childhood home in Bradfield Southend, near Reading.

In the Instagram post, the Cambridges also included a tribute to Princess Diana, pictured cuddling William and Prince Harry. Their message read: ‘To mothers new and old and families spending today together and apart, we are thinking of you all at this difficult time.’

It came after Boris Johnson warned families to ‘really think very carefully’ about visiting their mothers.

So as celebrities including Paul McCartney and Victoria Beckham paid tribute to their mothers on social media, others toasted loved ones via video calls.

Samantha Cameron, wife of former prime minister David Cameron, posted an old photograph of herself with her mother Viscountess Astor, writing of her own Mother’s Day plans: ‘I’ll be FaceTiming mum with a glass of wine!’
