This off-beat British sitcom about a hapless reporter desperate for a girlfriend is packed with offcolour gags that wouldn’t have a hope of getting past the Beeb’s censors. If you like your comedy politically incorrect, try this. One series Brooklyn Nine-Nine NETFLIX
The detectives of the 99th precinct are a bunch of overgrown children, flirting in the playground and kept in check by their stern head teacher. Five series Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt NETFLIX
The Fritzl case, where a woman escaped after more than 20 years held captive underground, is the backstory for Kimmy Schmidt (Ellie Kemper), an optimistic young woman who heads straight for New York to begin a new life. Her speech is peppered with 1990s slang and she can’t get used to 21st-century values. Four series Russian Doll NETFLIX
As dark as Kimmy Schmidt is upbeat, this druggy comedy stars writer and director Natasha Lyonne (whose breakthrough came with Orange Is The New Black, also on Netflix) as a video game designer stuck in a loop: every night she’s at an awful party, and when she leaves she gets killed . . . only to find herself back at the party. A second season is on the way. One series Glow NETFLIX
This high-camp comedy drama is the true story of a troupe of actresses and assorted chancers who made a career in the macho world of body slams and piledrivers. The Gorgeous Ladies Of Wrestling were so popular that they had their own TV show. Alison Brie plays Ruth, who finds herself in the ring with her ex-best friend Debbie — after breaking up Debbie’s marriage by sleeping with her husband. This is soap opera with half nelsons and great gags. Three series Avenue 5 NOWTV
Hugh Laurie is the captain of an interplanetary cruiseliner in this sci-fi comedy created by Armando Iannucci. Only he’s not really an astronaut — he’s an actor with an alcohol problem. The only man qualified to fly the ship is dead, impaled on an antennae in an accident during routine maintenance, so when the ship is knocked off course by a gravity blip there’s no one aboard who knows how to get the 3,000 passengers home. Mutiny ensues. It’s like Star Trek colliding with The Poseidon Adventure. Huge fun. One series
